Hotel and Motel: Origins of the terms The French word hostel, which then became hôtel, was used to identify a noble dwelling. On the other hand, the word Motel comes from American English, meaning a fusion of two words: Motor and Hotel, indicating a functional accommodation dedicated to travellers along their journey.

Motels will generally have only one or two floors while hotels may be high-rise. Motels will also generally have less features and more limited food and beverage offerings. There'll be fewer staff and a smaller number of specialised staff. And this generally translates to lower rates for guests.

Entering dictionaries after World War II, the word motel, coined as a portmanteau of "motor hotel", originates from the defunct motel named Milestone Mo-Tel in San Luis Obispo, California (later renamed as "Motel Inn"), which was built in 1925.

Basic amenities in a motel would usually include a bed, bathroom, television, and possibly a small kitchenette. Some motels may offer complimentary breakfast, free Wi-Fi, and in-room coffee makers.
